Library revamp raises privacy issues

There are many different ways in which privacy issues can and do arise in libraries. According to a story in the Berwick Advertiser (Privacy concern raised following library revamp), concerns over privacy arose as a result of the way in which the same building was being used for a number of council functions. Privacy concerns were raised over the potential for conversations to be overheard when these could be about sensitive issues- for example, if people were talking about housing benefits.

The story is a useful reminder of the need for a privacy impact assessment before the introduction of new services offered by libraries, or changes to the way in which existing services are provided.
